Tracie Morris is a poet and vocalist who works in multiple media. She has performed extensively around the world. Her sound installations have been presented at numerous institutions, such as the Drawing Center, Ronald Feldman Gallery, Thomas Hirschhorn’s Gramsci Monument presented by Dia Art Foundation, Jamaica Center for Arts and Learning, Dia: Chelsea, The Kitchen Performance Space, The Museum of Modern Art, The Silent Barn, and The Whitney Biennial. Morris is the recipient of awards, fellowships, and grants for poetry and performance, including New York Foundation for the Arts, Asian Cultural Council, Franklin Furnace and Creative Capital fellowships as well as residencies at Millay, Yaddo and MacDowell colonies. Tracie’s work has been extensively anthologized and recorded. Her most recent poetry collection, handholding:5 kinds, was published by Kore Press in 2016. She is co-editor of Best American Experimental Writing 2016 with Charles Bernstein, published by Wesleyan University Press. Tracie holds an MFA in poetry from Hunter College and a PhD in Performance Studies from New York University, has studied American acting technique at Michael Howard Studios and classical British acting techniques at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London. She is a former fellow of Creative Writing at the University of Pennsylvania. Tracie has taught at many prestigious academies and is the founding Professor and Coordinator of Performance and Performance Studies at Pratt Institute, New York.

Residency Statement
During this residency, I’d like to consider relationships: between the body, breath, voice, sound, poetry and the self. If I had to think of one idea that would encapsulate the residency it’s “resonance”: Sonic, embodied, emotive, literary and performative. We will look at how different forms of resonance interact with others and how we can be generative of the resonances that we’re always feeling and making. This is a time to connect to the concept of “voice.” The literal voice but also the aesthetic indicators that we alone make. How can we embrace our own voice without seeking to “perfect” it? How do embrace our difference unconditionally and how do we expand that voice to other media, forms of embodiment and page-based work? These ideas will be the focus of the residency through visual, audio, meditative and embodied practices.
Application Requirements
- A letter of intent (.doc, .docx, .pdf) If you want to send a written sample, that’s fine.
- You may submit up to 3-5 poems, or 5 pages total (.doc, .docx, .pdf) I don’t need an audio sample. We’ll discover the “voice” together. However, if you want to send an audio sample, that’s fine.
- You may submit up to 10 minutes total audio, or video. (Maximum file size is 10 MB, or include a link to your video sharing source or website).
Residency Fee: $900
Includes a $100 administration fee, weekday meals and housing; does not include artist materials, transportation, or weekend meals.
