A Los Angeles native working in New York City, Sanford Biggers creates artworks that integrate film, video, installation, sculpture, drawing, original music and performance. He intentionally complicates issues such as hip hop, Buddhism, politics, identity, and art history in order to offer new perspectives and associations for established symbols. Through a multi-disciplinary formal process and a syncretic creative approach he makes works that are as aesthetically pleasing as they are conceptual.

Residency Statement
What power does an object, painting, video or performance have in an age of constant streaming and “reality” programming and where things are increasingly consumed digitally? What does form, function and content mean when each term is being challenged by technology, marketplace and mass media?
What do YOU as a creator have to say?
In this workshop, we will explore and discuss what it means to be an artist in this moment of changing definitions, shifting media, myriad artistic contexts and a recurring obsession with the quantitative rather than qualitative measures of art. Artists are encouraged to come and take a stance about what they are making and why they believe is relevant and important today. This discussion will take place in the form of individual informal studio critiques as well as more formal group discussion and group critique. All disciplines are welcome.
Application Requirements
I believe fun and informal group interaction to be as valuable as studio time, thusly, I am looking for a group of individuals who are not only active in the studio but excited to engage in lively group conversations regarding cultural production and other far reaching topics. Day and nighttime dérives and adventures are encouraged. I would prefer each artist come with a project, series or works already in progress so we can start immediately, avoiding lag time due to readjusting to a new environment.
During these three weeks, each participant will be responsible for:
– A Power Point or PDF slide presentation introducing the group to their work as well as various inspirations (of any kind!).
– Hosting at least two informal group studio visits to discuss works and ideas in progress
– Presenting one new, critique-ready work to be presented and discussed in a final group critique. Due to our short time together, this final piece can be in any medium even if it is a departure from your normal materials.
Applicants should submit
- a biography and a short statement about your work and yourself (.doc, .docx, .pdf)
- a resume (.doc, .docx, .pdf)
- Additionally, each applicant should include a brief response to the following question: (.doc, .docx, .pdf)
- Why is it important to make the kind of work you are currently making or engage the themes you are exploring at this moment in art and/or world history?\
- 5 digital images (jpg – less than 5 mb each), of relevant finished work are required and up to 5 in progress works are encouraged but not mandatory.
- Video, sound and time based artists should submit a work not longer than 10 minutes, or a 10 minute excerpt from a longer project. Provide link(s) to (web site, YouTube, Vimeo etc.)
Residency Fee: $900
Includes a $100 administration fee, weekday meals and housing; does not include artist materials, transportation, or weekend meals.
