Residency Dates: June 27, 2021 - July 17, 2021
Application Deadline: January 17, 2021
Due to COVID-19 and the immense stress it has put on artists, ACA will be offering FULL scholarships to all accepted artists for Residency #182! The Board of Trustees and staff feel protecting our core mission is paramount, and are grateful to the Pabst Steinmetz Foundation for allowing us to make this commitment to funding exceptional artists during these times.
Phoebe Gloeckner is a Pabst Endowed Chair for Master Writers
Phoebe Gloeckner is a cartoonist, visual artist, and author. She was born in Philadelphia and raised in San Francisco. Her books include A Child’s Life and Other Stories and The Diary of a Teenage Girl; an Account in Words and Pictures. The Diary of a Teenage Girl was adapted for the screen and produced as a film in 2015. Directed by Marielle Heller, and starring Bel Powley, Alexander Skarsgård, and Kristen Wiig, the film opened at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival.
Cartoonist R. Crumb described a story in A Child’s Life as “one of the comic book masterpieces of all time.” In a New York Times profile of Gloeckner, author Peggy Orenstein said, “Gloeckner is arguably the brightest light among a small cadre of semi-autobiographical cartoonists who are creating some of the edgiest work about young women’s lives in any medium.”
Gloeckner was awarded a Guggenheim for her work on her current project, a multimodal novel about a family living about 300 yards from the US border in Ciudad Juárez, Mexico.
She is a professor at the University of Michigan Stamps School of Art and Design.
Residency Statement:
This residency is an opportunity for cartoonists/graphic novelists* to focus on their work and interact with accomplished peers. You may be ready to start a new piece, or come with a project that’s already underway. If you plan to come with work-in-progress, please bring work that is not so close to completion that you can’t benefit from critique or suggestion.
We will spend the earlier part of the day working on our projects and join later in the afternoon or evening for group discussion and critique. I’ll also meet regularly with individual artists.
* particularly “auteur” creators; those who are the author of both the images and textual elements of their work.
Application Requirement:
