Born in New York City in 1963, percussionist, composer and visual artist Billy Martin dedicated himself to music full-time at age 17—casting himself into Manhattan’s thriving, eclectic musical landscape. He carefully honed his craft everywhere from chamber orchestra stages to Brazilian nightclubs to the underground performance spaces that nurtured the burgeoning downtown improv community. He has published anti-instructional films, literature, artwork and music worldwide. He is currently the executive director and CEO of Creative Music Studio a not-for-profit foundation (founded 1971 by Karl Berger, Ingrid Sertso and Ornette Coleman) to expose musicians from all backgrounds to the art of improvisation.

Residency Statement

I am looking forward to working with musicians from all backgrounds to discuss the creative process and performing together in a casual workshop setting. We will primarily focus on strategies that help develop our own sound vocabulary and how to develop personal ways of composing and/or improvising. We will also work together using visual cues, graphic scores, musical game pieces and listening exercises. Various topics will range from listening, making sound, using silence, phraseology, rhythm, acoustics, timbre, ‘chemistry’, inherent character, impressions, performance art, to philosophical conversations.
