Put A Bird On It

This community art project will be on display now through August 2023.

In the spring of 2023, Atlantic Center for the Arts invited the public to a series of free talks designed to create an awareness and appreciation of the environment through the study of birds and the Florida Wildlife Corridor. Southeast Volusia Audubon Society, Stetson University Water and Environmental Resilience Institute, Florida Native Plant Society and Canaveral National Seashore speakers informed audiences on these important topics. Community members from Beachside Nursing Home, NSB High School, the ACA Volunteer League, ACA’s homeschool art program, and NSB residents were invited to use colored pens to create a bird for inclusion in this kinetic art mobile. This artwork is on display at ACA Harris House from June-August 2023.

  Southeast Volusia Audubon Society speakers John Pierce and Mary Schreiber discuss protecting birds and their habitats—featured birds are the scrub jay and barred owl
• May 24, 2-4 PM, ACA Yurick Studios (123 Douglas Street, New Smyrna Beach)
  Florida Native Plant Society speaker with a lecture titled “Plants for Birds”
• May 25, 10-11AM, New Smyrna Beach High School (STUDENTS ONLY)
  Stetson Institute for Water and Environmental Resilience speaker and birdwatcher Megan Martin—featured birds are the woodpecker and egret
• June 3, 4-5 PM, ACA Harris House (214 South Riverside Drive, New Smyrna Beach)
  Opening reception and unveiling of kinetic art bird mobiles to be seen and enjoyed by the entire community

The series is made possible by Latitude Margaritaville Daytona Beach Foundation, which has awarded a community grant to Atlantic Center for the Arts to fund the Put a Bird on It environmental arts project.
