OUTreach: Angela Dufresne

June 26, 6:00 PM - 7:00 PM

Join us for Mentoring Artist-in-Residence colloquium series featuring leading artists presenting their studio practice, work process and notable works. Mature content. This event is free and open to the public. ADA accessible.

Angela Dufresne will present her approach to building narratives through conversations, dialogue, shared authorship, and collaboration, focusing on exploring complex themes in art. The presentation will feature an overview of Dufresne’s artistic journey, beginning with her early riff works from the mid-2000s and progressing to her recent cinema-based and crowd works spanning 2018-2022. This retrospective aims to highlight the evolution and convergence of her artistic themes and techniques over the years.

Additionally, Dufresne will discuss her collaborative process with associate artists-in-residence, emphasizing shared stories, creative writing, intimate studio exchanges, and unstructured creative time. This approach aims to create a social space for exchanging cultural perspectives and collectively analyzing and enhancing their work. External disciplinary lenses such as cinema, literature, pop culture, and critical theory will be employed to deepen the artistic explorations of the participants.

Angela Dufrense is a painter originally from Connecticut, raised however in the town in Kansas (Olathe-Suburbs) that Dick and Perry stopped in before they killed the Clutters (In Cold Blood), and now based in Brooklyn.   Through painting, drawing, printmaking, performative works, and community building she wields heterotopic narratives that are both nonhierarchical and unapologetically perverse, conjuring the rage, piss and vinegar and passion of being female in America in 2022. She is a founding member of The Fragile Institute, a nomadic platform for exhibitions, publications and social actions including the exhibitions Density’s Glitch at the Fine Arts Work Center, Augurhythms at Hesse Flatow, NY in 2022 and Density Betrays Us at the Hole, NY in 2021.  She is a founder of ADVICE VOTE, an active civic engagement platform for teachers and art students across America.
