Praised by The Chicago Tribune as “minutely crafted” and “utterly lovely,” The New York Times as “whimsical” and “surreal,” and The Washington Post as “dark and deeply poetic,” the music of Brazilian-born composer Marcos Balter (b.1974) is intentionally chameleonic, embracing eclecticism and unorthodoxy as positive forces. Collaborations with artists from diverse practices such as choreographer Bill T. Jones, and yMusic, Deerhoof, the International Contemporary Ensemble, and many songwriters and DJs have proven crucial to his artistic trajectory. He has been awarded fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation, the Tanglewood Music Center, and the Civitella Ranieri Foundation, as well as commissions from the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Los Angeles Philharmonic, Fromm Foundation at Harvard and Chamber Music America, and others. Residency Statement: The primary goal of this residency will be to explore the concept of community in the imagining, realization, and diffusion of music through inclusive experimentation and intensive collaboration. Artists working with sound in any capacity are welcome to apply, as long as they have a desire to transform and combine their existing practices and experiences with those of others, including all Associate Artists and the Atlantic Center for the Arts community at large.
