In 1975 Abigail Perlmutter submitted a portfolio of images to her academic advisors in pursuit of her MFA at the Rochester Institute of Technology. The images centered on figures and places familiar to Perlmutter, and through the capture of her camera she attempted to create a “symbolic language through certain subjective feeling-states.” Alongside these images her thesis defense was peppered with statements that sought to challenge then-contemporary notions of subjectivity, the role of the artist, the life of the art object, and the affectations of photography. Perlmutter’s graduate work was picked up by collectors and major art institutions such as the Museum of Modern Art New York. She has not released any public photography since her thesis defense 43 years ago. Through the Atlantic Center of the Arts, the Southeast Museum of Photography revisits Abigail Perlmutter’s work in an exploration of Perlmutter’s “interest in the progression of my ideas through change.”
The Southeast Museum of Photography exhibits, collects, preserves, and interprets photography to facilitate teaching and learning at Daytona State College, and enhances the community’s understanding and appreciation of culture, history, art and photography. Learn More
