Storytelling and the Narrative in Images

February 2 - February 22

Opening Reception: Saturday, February 2, 2019, 4 PM – 7 PM
On Display: February 5 – 22, 2019
Gallery Hours: Tuesday – Friday, 10 AM – 4 PM
Art Therapist Ruth Harpaz writes “both my own research and my Art Therapy practice have been enriched by the use of narrative and storytelling as therapy interventions.  The storytelling ability emanates from narrative knowledge.”  Arthur Frank also explains why storytelling and the narrative is so important in his Art Therapy sessions, “patients create empathic bonds between the wounded story teller and the wounded healer.”  Humans need empathy and understanding, that it why telling their story can be so liberating. Some of the earliest art was evidence of our ancestors telling stories.  Ancient communities and cultures were founded on stories and legends.  Storytelling can also be an interesting way to teach fundamental values, but it can also be a cunning way to scare the masses. Curated by Bethany Bennett, MFA

Release Your Grief in Words & Color

October 12, 1:00 pm - 3:30 pm

Live Oak Cultural Center, 1050 Live Oak Street, New Smyrna Beach
Many shades and types of grief exist in the human experience. Express and release these emotions in a personal and supportive way. Using a variety of different types of line and words with special meaning to you – a name, a poem, a quote or even a string of descriptive adjectives – and the addition of hue through the use of watercolors, we’ll create an abstract composition with a secret message that you can enjoy for yourself or choose to share with others. No artistic experience is necessary. You’ll be guided through the process by artist and expressive arts facilitator, Heather L. Pastor. Limited to 12 participants. RSVP required.  Free, and open to everyone! (386) 423-1753 | community@atlanticcenterforthearts.org
