“your word was an amazing, life-changing experience for me, and I think it is the greatest gift anyone could give young writers - a chance to work with incredibly talented masters of their particular medium, a chance to work with other talented writers their own age, and a chance to get away from the world and try to figure out who they are. I learned a great deal about myself those two weeks.”
- Chase Berggrun, 2008 your word participant, currently pursuing a degree in Creative Writing from University of Massachusetts at Amherst, and returning to ACA in 2011as the recipient of a Summer Residential Internship.
Residency Schedule
Teen writers will join three Master Writers-in-Residence, one in each of the following genres - poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction/memoir.
Participants will explore and experiment with each of the represented genres of literature. The mentorship with the Master Writers-in-Residence will be the focus, but the chance to interact with Visiting Writers, the your word Fellow (an emergent writer-in-residence) and other participating young writers will be invaluable.
Writing workshops with Master Artists-in-Residence meet Monday through Friday for two hours with additional scheduled time for independent writing. Participants will have the opportunity to explore a variety of forms of literature through workshops and conversation. Additional afternoon workshops will focus on a variety of literary topics.
In addition to the literary workshops, participants will have the chance to enjoy the local area during their downtime. Activities will include weekend day trips to Canaveral National Seashore, evening events and readings with guest writers, an open mic event, and arts workshops. Chaperones will be on-site, 24-hours a day throughout the residency.
