Atlantic Center Awarded Joan Mitchell Foundation Grant

Atlantic Center for the Arts has been awarded a Joan Mitchell Foundation Grant for $25,000 to provide residency scholarships based on financial need to painters and sculptors at ACA. This grant award marks the fourth consecutive year of the Joan Mitchell Foundation’s scholarship funding for ACA’s Artists-in-Residence Program.

Atlantic Center is honored and grateful for the Foundation’s dedicated support of the artistic careers of talented emerging and midcareer painters and sculptors. This designated funding has become ever more critical and sustaining for young artists in the current economic climate. The Joan Mitchell Foundation’s gift contributes to the very high quality of participating artists and to dynamic residency experiences.

For 2009 Joan Mitchell Foundation scholarship recipient Molly Larkey, her ACA residency was a “truly transformative time.” Larkey’s said that the new works created during her three weeks in residence “will be a blueprint for the next stage in my development as an artist, and it would not have happened had I not had the time, space, and community afforded to me by the residency at Atlantic Center.”

This Joan Mitchell Foundation grant supports Atlantic Center in its goal of increasing contributed and endowed income so that fees can be discontinued, and all artists-in-residence can attend at no charge.

Atlantic Center for the Arts is a nonprofit 501 (c)(3), interdisciplinary artists-in-residence community and arts education facility dedicated to promoting artistic excellence by providing talented artists an opportunity to work and collaborate with some of the world's most distinguished contemporary artists in the fields of music composition and the visual, literary and performing arts. Community interaction is coordinated through on-site and outreach presentations, workshops and exhibitions.
