Day of Soundscape I

November 9, 2019, 11:00 AM - 3:00 PM

Free with park admission

November 9, 11 AM – 3 PM
Canaveral National Seashore, Apollo Beach, New Smyrna Beach (meet at the Visitor’s Center)

A full day of soundscape immersion with special guest Jack Hines of Wild Sanctuary, the internationally acclaimed soundscape field research and sound arts group founded by Dr. Bernie Krause (author of The Great Animal Orchestra: Finding the Origins of Music in the World’s Wild Places and a key figure in implementing natural soundscapes as a resource for the U. S. National Park Service). Jack Hines is a musician, environmental advocate, GIS technician, field-recordist, soundscape ecologist, and educator with nearly 20 years as an associate member of Wild Sanctuary. His deep understanding of sounds of the natural wild, their relationship to music, and to those of enhancing human health and wellness, make him a multi-talented leader in this field. Both studied and intuitive, Jack’s comprehensive field and teaching skills along with his enthusiasm to share the wonders of the outdoors – and relate them to life in the modern world – are timely and vital.

Join Atlantic Center for the Arts and Jack Hines for a Soundwalk at 11 AM, then explore deeper into the inner world of soundscape and field recording with a presentation at the Leeper-Schultz House at Canaveral National Seashore. Learn about the history of soundscape ecology in the U.S. National Park Service, and practice listening awareness exercises developed by the Wild Sanctuary team.

RSVP required. Limited to 60 participants. Free with park admission
