Residency #137
MAY 17 - JUNE 6
(Application Deadline: February 5, 2010)
RADCLIFFE BAILEY, visual arts
Atlanta-based artist Radcliffe Bailey has created an exceptional body of work. The artist works by patterning together vintage photographs, objects he collects and painted words and maps in a multi-layered narrative which explores both the history of African Americans, as well as Bailey’s own personal history and influences. One of his greatest influences has been jazz music, and his mixed media paintings embody the spatial and environmental qualities of music. These elements are held together by his mastery of formal balance, rhythm and vivid color. His more recent work has progressed into the realm of sculpture and site-specific installations.
Mr. Bailey has exhibited in many solo and group exhibitions in museums throughout the United States, including “Flow: Paintings and Installations by Radcliffe Bailey”, Jacksonville Museum of Modern Art, Jacksonville, FL (2006), “Spiritual Migration,” Atlanta College of Art, Atlanta GA (2001), “ARTCurrents II: Radcliffe Bailey,” The Mint Museum of Art, Charlotte, NC (1992) “Out of Bounds: New Work by 8 Southeast Artists,” Nexus Contemporary Art Center, Atlanta, GA (1996), “La Foire Internationale d’Art Contemporain,” The Grand Palais, Paris, France (1993), “As Time Goes By,” Whitney Museum of American Art at Champion (1997) “Landscape as Metaphor,” The Logan Collection, Vail, CO (2003) His works are in many public and private collections including Art Institute of Chicago, IL, Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington, DC, Metropolitan Museum of Art, NY, San Francisco Museum of Art, CA, High Museum of Art, GA, New Britain Museum of Art, New Britain, CT, Harvard University Art Collection, MA, Dallas Museum of Art, TX, Mint Museum of Art, Charlotte, NC Smithsonian Institution, Washington, DC and many more. His commissions include Hartsfield International Airport, Atlanta, GA, Knoxville Convention Center, Knoxville, TN, Ulrich Museum of Art, and Wichita State University, Wichita, KS. He is currently in the planning phase of an installation at Spoleto, Charleston, SC for 2011 and is in the midst of wrapping up his DNA Project, which follows his ancestor’s voyage from Africa to America and beyond.
Born in Bridgeton, NJ, Bailey graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Atlanta College of Art, Atlanta. He has taught at University of Georgia, Athens and has served as visiting faculty at Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, Maine.

RESIDENCY STATEMENT
During this residency I intend to create an innovative installation that will assemble a community (associate artists and myself) of talented, forward-thinking individuals to construct an interactive final installation based on new thoughts and experimentation. Inspired by the likes of Duke Ellington (Jazz musician), George Washington Carver (Scientist), Sun-Ra and Buck Fuller (Architect), I will draw upon their strengths of their expertise to conceive a new type of installation using music, moving images, models and the like. With the combined assets of the Associate Artists and the inspiration of celebrated innovators, we will produce an installation that will be visually, audibly, and texturally engaging.
I’d like Associate Artists from various backgrounds--cinema, dance, music, architecture, sculpture, crafts, carpentry-- to be apart of an engaging artistic experiment. I am thinking of this residency as an opportunity to explore the melding of different genres in addition to visual arts, while creating an installation that will be timeless in message and gives back to humanity.
